On a bitterly cold windswept pitch the Hares took on Brookfield Academy. It took only 8 minutes into the game, after sustained pressure from the Hares, that Tom Ciarla opened the scoring through an untidy goal mouth struggle. On 22 minutes, a shot by Elliott Higginbotham brought a handball, and a penalty, which was quickly converted again by Tom Ciarla. As the game progressed the Hares grew in confidence and continued to play solid football with good open passing and focused play.
The second half opened with early pressure from Brookfield which prompted a superb save from Josh Lucas. A few minutes later a brilliant dribble again by Tom Ciarla who, having beaten several players including the goalkeeper, saw his shot slip by just outside the post. At 60 minutes Robbie Pear scored another of his opportune goals which, was quickly added to, following a very nice build of passes, by a goal from Roy Devlia.
Thomas Gregory’s constant pressure on the Brookfield defence was eventually rewarded when, having beaten 2 players, he took his time and smashed a tremendous shot into the top left hand corner of the net, past a helpless Brookfield goalkeeper, to make the score 5-0.
However Tom Ciarla had decided the game was not finished when he dropped onto an early ball at pace on the half way line and decided to go it alone and scored again after passing several players a very confident goal to make it 6-0 and his 19th of the season.
This was an excellent performance from the Hares who are growing in confidence and playing some very constructive football. In the post match summary the coach said ‘superb’ 3 times and awarded the Man of the Match deservedly to the whole team.
He was right – the team learnt later that they had moved to the top of the table.
