On a blustery Sunday morning and on a wet and sticky pitch the scene was set for this top of table contest. The game did not disappoint and both sides threw themselves forward with open and attacking football and both keepers were quickly in the game making crucial saves. After 25 minutes a Cuffley break presented a good chance for a shot on goal, with a strong wind and the ball moving in the air the shot sailed into the top corner of the goal just off the finger tips of a diving Hares keeper, George Pear.
Only 5 minutes into the second half time and now with the wind behind them the Hares quickly equalised with a fine opportunistic goal from the Hares top striker Tom Ciarla. This raised the tempo of the game even further with both teams now throwing players forward and each side having their chances and with the Hares growing more and more confident. Sadly against this order play, midway in the second half a not particularly strong shot, not even on goal accidentally caught the hand of the Hares defender Jordan Fort. The referee awarded a penalty which was quickly converted to make the score 2-1. On 60 minutes a superb Cuffley free kick taken midway in the Hares half found the top corner of the net to make the score 3-1. However the Hares dug in and showed true character and spirit and pressed hard, this was rewarded with a powerful on the turn strike by Roy Devlia to take a fine goal before being buried in the arms of his team mates!
The game looked set for a grand finale but a few minutes later an optimistic attack on the left side by Cuffley was mis defended on this greasy pitch and their determined striker took it all the way to slide the ball into the net to make it 4-2.
Both teams brought the best out of each other’s games and this was a fine match, after the game both coaches felt probably a draw might have been a fairer result. Roy Devlia and Elliott Higginbotham jointly won the Man of the Match award – well played
The Hares team is noticeably growing stronger, and showing more character and confidence in every game……….
